Name art is one of my my go-to favourites for beginning of the year art projects... it helps me to recall names and get to know new names of my students.
This project was done with my grade 4's..
Materials:
Cardboard
White Glue
String or Twine
Old Paint Brushes for Glue
Water and containers
Tin Foil
Sponges
Tape
Markers (Permanent)
Process:
We used recycled pieces of cardboard boxes to write our name designs on. The students then "traced" their names in white glue and string one letter at a time.
We used paint brushes to spread any extra globs of glue over and around the string to make sure they were secure and not moving around when they dried.
Then we added more designs to the background using the same technique.
When everything was dry (the next class) we covered the cardboard/string designs in white glue quickly with a paint brush and put a sheet of foil on top.
We used a sponge working from the center outwards to gently smooth the foil into all the crevices as best as we could being careful not to tear the foil. We folded the excess foil over the edges and taped it in place on the back.
The final step was colouring the spaces, but not the string in different colours and patterns using permanent markers.
